The TATAR-KT4 is a four-axle articulated tram developed by the Czechoslovakian company CKD, with production taking place from 1974 to 1997.
The first batch of mass-produced vehicles was put into operation in 1977, and a total of 1,747 units were manufactured. Initially, these trams were delivered to East Germany; later, they were also supplied to the Soviet Union and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The KT4 was specifically designed for both standard-gauge and metre-gauge tram tracks. Due to the global economic and political changes at that time, the production of KT4 trams was halted in 1991. A brief resumption of production occurred in 1997, during which the final 20 units were produced for Belgrade, Serbia.
Since the early 1990s, many of the earliest-produced trams have undergone extensive refurbishment and reconstruction, including the replacement of folding doors and the installation of a low-floor central section. The design of the KT4 tram does not include bogies at the articulation points; instead, it requires a scissor-type joint connecting two bogies. This design prevents catastrophic shifts in the centre of gravity when the tram is negotiating turns.
