1:43 SSM LM-68 Leningrad Tram City Public Transport Passenger Car Diecast Model Collection

Description

The first prototype of the LM-68 tram was manufactured at the Leningrad VARZ (Vagonostroitelny Zavod, or Carriage-Building Plant) in 1968. Mass production of the tram began in the same year and continued until 1974. The LM-68 came into being in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s, a period when passenger traffic was on the rise, creating an increased demand for trams with larger passenger capacity.

Technical Parameters and Structure

It is a single-direction tram with a track gauge of 1524 millimeters. It features an all-metal load-bearing body and is equipped with two bridge-type two-axle motor bogies. A three-carriage LM-68 tram has a total length of 45 meters and can accommodate over 600 passengers.

Design Features and Defect Improvements

The LM-68 tram was the first to adopt a panoramic glass window design. However, the roof glass was prone to leaking during rain, earning the tram the nickname "Aquarium" (Akvarium in Russian). In 1973, a modified version, the LM-68M, was developed, which eliminated the water leakage defect.

Current Status

Today, this type of tram can still be seen at the St. Petersburg City Electric Transport Museum.

Notes on Key Terms

  • VARZ: Abbreviation for "Вагоностроительный завод" (Vagonostroitelny Zavod) in Russian, referring to a carriage-building plant; the full name is often retained in abbreviated form in international technical documents related to Soviet/Russian trams.
  • 1524 mm track gauge: This is a standard broad gauge used in the former Soviet Union and many post-Soviet countries, also known as "Russian gauge," which is slightly wider than the 1435 mm standard gauge used in most of Europe, North America, and China.
  • Bridge-type two-axle motor bogie: A key component of the tram's running gear, where "bridge-type" describes the bogie's structural design (integrated frame supporting two axles), and "motor bogie" indicates it is equipped with traction motors to drive the tram.

  • The wheels can rotate.
  • The wheel frames can swing.
