Plane Prototype History:
The TBD Devastator Bomber Was The Main Carrier Based Torpedo Aircraft Of The Us Navy In The Early Stages Of World War II. It Was Developed By For Douglas Company In 1934, First Flew On April 15, 1935, And Officially Entered Service In 1937. As The First All Metal Monoplane Carrier Based Aircraft Of The Us Navy, It Marks A Technological Leap From Biplane To Monoplane In Carrier Based Aircraft Design, And For The First Time Adopts Innovative Designs Such As Hydraulic Folding Wings And Fully Enclosed Cockpits, Significantly Improving The Carrying Efficiency Of Carrier Based Aircraft. TBD Adopts A Three Person Crew Configuration (Pilot, Bomb Thrower, Rear Gunner), With A Maximum Flight Speed Of 332 Kilometers Per Hour And A Range Of Approximately 700 Kilometers When Loaded With Torpedoes. Its Main Weapon Is An 878kg Mk.13 Torpedo Or A 450kg Bomb. Although It Is Faster And Has A Longer Range Compared To Previous Biplanes Such As The Martin T4m, The TBD Was Already Lagging Behind When The Pacific War Broke Out, Especially In Terms Of Speed, Defense, And Maneuverability, Inferior To The Japanese Type 97 Carrier Based Attack Aircraft. The "Highlight Moment" Of TBD Was The Sinking Of The Japanese Hōshō Aircraft Carrier In The Battle Of Coral Sea In May 1942. However, The Battle Of Midway In June Of The Same Year Became A Turning Point: The Us Deployed 41 TBDs To Attack The Japanese Fleet, But Due To Slow Speed And Lack Of Escort, They Were Surrounded By Japanese Zero Fighters And Anti-Aircraft Guns, With Only 6 Returning. Despite The Dismal Results, The Sacrifice Of The TBD Fleet Attracted Japanese Fighter Planes To Low Altitudes, Creating A Crucial Opportunity For Subsequent SBD Dive Bombers To Successfully Destroy Japanese Aircraft Carriers. After The Battle Of Midway, TBD Was Quickly Replaced By The More Powerful TBF Avengers And Was Completely Retired In 1944. Despite Its Short Service Life And High Combat Damage Rate, TBD, As The Starting Point Of Technological Innovation In The Us Navy' S Carrier Based Aircraft, Promoted The Evolution Of Torpedo Aircraft Design Concepts And Played A Transitional Role In The Early Stages Of The Pacific War, Providing Valuable Experience For The Improvement Of Subsequent Aircraft Models.
